UpDate on Brouwer’s 15th Anniversary Celebration: Let’s all celebrate from a distance edition!

Well these sure are interesting times we’re living through! It was 1 week ago today that we had to temporarily close our doors, and when we’ll be able to open them again is a complete unknown. March 24th is Brouwer’s actual 15th Anniversary, and our original plan was to open our cellar and have a big party, to celebrate the community of patrons, family and friends that have made this possible on March 28th this year. All that has changed ….

March 24th is Brouwer’s actual 15th Anniversary, and our original plan was to open our cellar and have a big party, to celebrate the community of patrons, family and friends that have made this possible on March 28th this year. All that has changed ….

We also brewed two beers we had hoped to tap, a sour with E9 and Holy Mountain, which we will be holding onto and releasing at a later date. The other an IPA collaboration with Stoup, Cloudburst and Standard. Instead of tapping the IPA, we have asked for cans, lots of them!

So, 4-packs of our 15th Anniversary IPA, “I Thought We Were Friends!” will be available at Stoup, Cloudburst and Standard for pick up, starting Wednesday, March 25th at 12 noon.

We hope you grab yourself some and toast us on our special day! We’re sorry we can’t celebrate with you in person, but really look forward to doing so sometime soon!

Stay safe, stay healthy, and remember we’re in this together!

Thank you all and we appreciate each an everyone of you.

Here’s the original post:

Holy shit, we’re turning 15. While it could be warranted to talk about what we’ve strived to provide for the beer community and how, after 15 years, we are still committed to the mission of providing one of the very best venues in the Pacific Northwest to enjoy beer, it isn’t our style to sit back and rest on our laurels. It is a time to reflect and then look forward.

We want to say thank you.

Thank you to every person who has ever stepped foot into Brouwer’s to enjoy a craft we love so dearly. Thank you to every guest who’s asked a question, tried a new beer or style, made a bad joke, become a regular, pre-gamed for your flight, spent your lunch break here, etc. What we mean to say is this: we couldn’t and wouldn’t be here with each and every one of you. We’ve changed a little over the years as we’re tried to meet the needs of beer lovers, whiskey drinkers, quick lunch eaters, and people who just casually walked in. We’ve tried to always do our best. This anniversary is for you; all of you.

Thank you to our present and past employees. We can still open our doors because of your dedication to craft beer, Belgian cuisine, and customer service. Not all of our relationships ended amicably, but at least a story or two from each of your time here still gets passed on; you are still part of this place. This anniversary is for you; all of you.

Thank you to all the brewers, distillers, brand reps, purveyors, and distributors for keeping us in stock of all our favorite beers, spirits, and food items. Your tireless, and often overlooked, work makes our jobs here so much easier. Without your dedication to quality, this place wouldn’t be thought of in the same light. Not nearly. This anniversary is for you; all of you.

And maybe most importantly, thank you to Vern. For over 15 years, he has provided many of us with a place to call home. Never one to micro-manage and always one to praise, you will not find a better business owner to work for. The Seattle beer community is a stronger place thanks to you and Bonney’s vision to take a Belgian-style bier café and make it into a world-class beer destination. The lineage of some of the Northwest’s finest beer establishments can trace its path through these doors and our little community tucked in the rainy PNW is all the richer for it. This anniversary is for you; enjoy it.

This year, we will have two anniversary beers. The first is a collaborative effort between E9, of the Tacoma E9s, and Holy Mountain, two of the finest producers of craft beer the country has to offer. The beer will be a sour rosé-style beer that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The second is a west coast-style IPA from the trio of Stoup, Standard, and Cloudburst. Both beers will be available to purchase from Bottleworks on the morning of the 28th.

In addition to those beers, we’ll have a few beers from each of the breweries, some of our past anniversary beers, and some other deep cuts from our cellar. If you’ve been to one of our anniversaries before, you know we also break out some cool beers from yesteryear.

We hope to see you out on March 28th to celebrate this occasion with us. We are so excited to be able to have the good fortune to turn 15 and start to plan for the next 15 years. Cheers!

Friday, March 13th-March 23rd, Structure’s Loam Temple IPA Seattle Release and Fundraiser for Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance

Loam – a fertile soil of clay and sand containing humus.

Temple- a building devoted to worship. aka a place where people worship

Last year it was “Dirt Church”, this year “Loam Temple”, but had we known how wet this winter would be, we might have dubbed it “Mud Shrine”! Why the nods to religion you ask?  Well, we all worship something (to some degree or another!), and for some of us it’s riding the dirt. I said just the other day “I don’t know where I’d be without mountain biking”, and the same holds true for the craft beer industry. Where these two communities intersect is where I live, breathe, drink and celebrate, and I’ve got lots of fantastic company!

Loam Temple is a way to say thanks, bring two passions together, and honor the folks that build and maintain mountain bike trails here in Washington (Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and WMBC), as well as make awesome beer (Structures Brewing).

How can you get involved?

Seattle Release/Events:

Friday, March 13th Bottleworks, located in Wallingford will be selling 4 packs to go.  $2 from every 4 pack will be donated to Evergreen, they will also donate a $1 a pint.  From March 13- March 23 Brouwer’s will donate the proceeds from all pint sales of Loam Church to Evergreen, so stop in for a pint or 3.

Saturday, March 14—There will be a trial dig/shred day in the I-90 corridor, probably in the Raging River trail system.  Details are still being worked out.  The plan is to dig for a bit, then get some shredding in.  Stay tuned for more details. Here and on the Evergreen site.

Bellingham Release/

Saturday, March 21st Sturctures will release cans at the brewery when they open at noon and donated a portion of the sales to WMBC.  Kona and WMBC will host a trail day on Galby.  More Details to come.  We will all meet up at the brewery around 4 pm to have a few pints.

Drunk Herstory Has Been Rescheduled for October 21st, 2020

We the Women of Drunk Herstory 2020 along with the management at Brouwer’s Cafe have chosen to reschedule our event that was planned for Wednesday March 11th due to concerns over COVID-19. We know that Brouwer’s customers have been great supports of this event in the past so please accept our most heartfelt apologies and mark your calendars for October 14th when we will be back. Please continue to support Brouwer’s, remember that Planned Parenthood is always accepting donations and wash your hands.

Saturday, February 29th and March 1st, 18th Annual Hardliver Barleywine Fest

What were you doing when you turned 18? Looking forward to graduating high school and getting out of the house? Getting ready to take on the awesome responsibility of jury duty? Preparing to vote in a government election for the first time? Thinking about running for office? All of the above?

Well, we know someone who is turning 18 this year! The Hard Liver Barleywine Festival of course! That’s right! It’s been 18 years since the little start up festival put on by Bottleworks at the Phinney Ridge Community Center began. Now it can do almost anything; well, except drink at its own celebration, but that’s neither here nor there.

Barleywine probably won’t be running for office, but we know it’d have our vote if it decided to. Luckily, it’s great for watch parties. Let’s be honest, we’ll probably need a stiff drink or two to get us through this election cycle. Join us on February 29th and March 1st for the 18th iteration of Hard Liver Barleywine Fest. We’ll have 40+ boozy barley treats for you to choose from, so remember that old timey adage…

Vote early, vote often, and vote Barleywine.

February 6th @ 3pm, 7th Annual Hop Mob

After five years the Washington Hop Mob has more than succeeded in its original goal of showing that we don’t need any fancy hypeboi Triple IPA from California, our local brewers can brew our very own fancy hypeboi Triple IPAs just as well

At one point, the number of participating breweries skyrocketed to over 40 from its humble beginning of just 12 Washington-only shops.

As with most things, the powers that be decided that the event needed change and adapt in order to survive. That’s why we are announcing a huge change to the Triple IPA only format. This year, Hop Mob will be open to all beers, provided they meet the following criteria:

Must be a new beer, specifically created for this event,

Have an IBU of 50+, and

Must be a complete expression of hop character.

That’s it? That’s it.

No style is off limits. A big, boozy, marshmallow macadamia nut imperial stout cram-jammed with Mosaic? Cool. A light-bodied lager double dry-hopped with Saaz, Motueka, and Galaxy? Word. An over-hopped juicy 12% Triple IPA? Tradition.

We’re super excited to let our friends in the brewing industry really let their hop flag fly. Join us on February 6th for a hop showcase a bit unlike anything we’ve done in the past.

Thursday, January 30th @7pm-11, 3rd Annual Beerlesque

Wednesday, January 29th @ Noon. SBBC/Georgetown Boop & Beep IPA Release

We are pleased to be a part of this group of awesome beer bar owners and operators. Boop and Beep is the result of one massive collaboration. Look for this beer on draft here and at the participating bars on January 29th. What follows is more info on the group:

January 6th was a good day for the beer community—The Seattle Beer Bar Coalition officially kicked off what will become a long and productive journey with a collaboration brew at Georgetown Brewing. The SBBC is made up of some of the city’s most well-known craft beer bars including Brouwer’s Cafe, Latona Pub, Bottleworks, Fiddler’s Inn, The Yard Cafe, Watershed Pub & Kitchen, Trailbend Taproom, Olaf’s, The Pine Box, Toronado Seattle, The Shambles, Beveridge Place Pub, Hopvine Pub, and The Dray.

The organization was created with several ideas in mind: to collaborate with our brewer friends; to create special beers for various charities; to meet and discuss the issues that affect our businesses; and to hopefully become a voice for the local beer industry from the unique perspective of craft focused bars.

Joining the many organizations that impact the beer industry including the WA Brewers Guild, the Seattle Restaurant Alliance, the Downtown Seattle Association and others, the SBBC plans to provide a different perspective and speak to issues related directly to the bars within the craft industry.

Collaborations are commonplace in the beer industry. The idea behind a collaboration beer is to meet, communicate on the elements of a recipe, be part of the brewing process, and help promote the strong sense of community that is unique to craft beer. Often these beers have a charitable nature to them, and in this case sales from Boop & Beep IPA will benefit the YWCA—a charity dear to Georgetown brewer Chris Bower and his family, as is reflected in the beer’s name, which is also of personal significance. The YWCA “is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” The beer is a modern Northwest IPA with Columbus bittering hops in the boil and later additions of Strata, Citra and Mosaic. It will be released on January 29th at each of the SBBC bars and Georgetown Brewing’s taproom.

The members of the SBBC are excited to move forward, starting with the Georgetown collaboration and expanding their presence within the community. The guiding principle is to have a group of influential “beer bar folks” that will help navigate each other through some of the challenges facing small businesses. In the end, the organization is about celebrating craft beer and the community surrounding it, especially the amazing beer bars, neighborhood pubs and breweries that comprise and nurture it.

Thursday, January 23rd @5pm. 10 year Vertical of Firestone Walker Anniversary on Draft.

Just like many of you, we too, are beer hoarders. And just like you, we’re running out of space in a cellar. We try to put together creative events that allow us to showcase both vintage and fresh selections while making space for the next wave of beers that will need some time to age.

A couple of years ago, we took real notice of something. We have some Firestone Walker Anniversary beers… like several years of them. In fact, at that point, we had anniversary beers 14th through 21st. At that point, we decided that 8 years is cool, but a decade would be a lot cooler. We hung on to those special beers for another two years.

On January 23rd at 5 p.m. we will be tapping Firestone Walker XIV-XXIII. David Walker, with his beautiful mane, will be in attendance to help send off a decade of making fantastic beers. We here are incredibly excited to be able to put this unique event on and we’re probably the only place outside of the brewery who can do it.

We’ll be doing two separate flights of five years each. Only flights will be available that evening, i.e., we will not be doing pours of single years. We want to be able to give everyone an opportunity to get a flight. We also suggest bringing a friend or two, because most of these beers are over 12%.

The taplist, because it is cool to type out, will be:

The Lion Flight:

Firestone Walker XIV

Firestone Walker XV

Firestone Walker XVI

Firestone Walker XVII

Firestone Walker XVIII

The Bear Flight:

Firestone Walker XIX

Firestone Walker XX

Firestone Walker XXI

Firestone Walker XXII

Firestone Walker XXIII

Saturday, December 7th @6pm, An Evening with Burial Brewing

Naming beers might be one of the most difficult parts in the logistics process. They need to be unique, stand out just enough, and stand out for the right reasons. It also helps if they reference something local and familiar. It often goes unnoticed, but a beer name can make or break the sale.

There are, of course, breweries that don’t care how local, familiar, or pleasant the names are. One of our favorite breweries subscribes to this principle. We are talking about Burial out of Asheville, NC. You might not be totally familiar with them, but they have been making outstanding beers of all styles on the east coast for quite a few years now. Doug and Tim, the owners, are products of the PNW brew scene, and into giving their beers rad names. They’ve been friends of the restaurant for a while now and were gracious enough to send some delicious treats our way, not just for festivals, but to have a bunch on at once. Bottleworks will also be getting some package, so you can enjoy them at home, at someone else’s home, in the woods, or at a ritual sacrifice.

On December 7th, yes, the Saturday of Big Wood, we’ll be tapping several of the beers we’re receiving for y’all to come out to try. It’ll be the next best thing to flying out to Asheville and checking out the scene (seriously, though, it is highly recommended).

Taplist for the evening:

To Wear the Feathers of Slain Beasts Mixed Culture Saison w/second use peaches

This Earthen Helix of Death DIPA

When You Lay in Your Grave DIPA

Hellstar Dark Lager

Contrition Pilsner

Surf Wax IPA

Thursday, December 5th – Sunday, December 8th. 13th Annual Bigwood Festival.

Here at Brouwer’s, we like our festivals. The is so much good in the beer world, that we like to host events that focus on a particular style to give the nice people out there a chance to try how diverse that style can be. Whether Barleywine, Stout, Sour, or IPA is life, we’ll have you covered at some point during the year.

Well, what if you want to try lots of different styles of beer, but are still REALLY into themes? We’ve got you there as well. The first Thursday of December, Big Wood begins anew. It is arguably our favorite festival because we get to showcase all different kinds of beer AND they will all be barrel-aged. As the winter gray settles in, it is the perfect time to hunker down in the beer cave and sip on some extraordinary offerings from your favorite breweries.

On December 5th – 8th, we will once again dive deep into the bowels of the cellar and pull all sorts of vintage goods for your palate from sour to sweet and everything in between. Join us that weekend for 50+ barrel-aged beers, making it one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the city. No tickets necessary, just come on down.

Wednesday, November 27th @ 6pm. Tapping of Firestone Walker Rolling Bones

This year, we lost a very important and special figure in not just our local scene, but the larger one as well. Obviously, we are talking about Matt Bonney,  former Operations Manager here at Brouwer’s, the Burgundian, and Bottleworks and owner of the Toronado Seattle,  and member of the Publican National Committee.  Rightfully so, many brewers have made special beers commemorating his life and legacy. It has been incredible to watch the community come together to to send the Centaur out in style. Years ago, while the PNC was still very active, they all got together to brew a handful of beers. They brewed a stout with Firestone Walker, and it was appropriately named PNC. A sour was brewed by Allagash and was named PNC #2 Broken Elevator.   Wanting to honor these amazing beers, the former members of the PNC descended upon Paso Robles and had a conference at the Walker Farm. Together they crafted two beers that will hopefully be a lasting tribute.

The stout isn’t ready just yet, but soon we’ll have the sour. We’ll be tapping a keg of Rolling Bones American Wild Ale fermented with plums, cherries, black currants, and grapes on Wednesday, November 27th. Bottles will be available for purchase at Bottleworks on that day as well.

We hope you’ll join us that evening.

Here’s more info on the beer itself:

Final beer details: American Wild Ale Fermented with Plums, Blackcurrants, Cherries and Grapes. 7.1% ABV.  Barrel Ratio: 67% French Oak, 22% American Oak, 10% Rum barrel.

“Kindred brothers from another mother sit down together to blend and stutter. Mindful of much to do about nothing they paint with their palate’s, ideas get them buzzing. For years they held court beguiling like jesters, imbibing and jiving the ether of ancestors. They bring to the table a blend for the ages, the tricks of their trade they weave in like sages. From field to vat to barrel to bottle, bound flavors of feral to be read like a novel. The sounds of the bones that dance on the barrel head, relative memories for spirits not gone dead. Currants and plums and grape skins and cuvee, Liefmans, Agrestic and Flanders are all in play. The game is a foot when the blend strikes a chord, still each in the group asks, “Is it me Lord?”. Found harmony through barrel and in friends past and present, the gift of this blend to bring joy, peace and presence. Santé!”

Friday, November 15th @ 6pm. An Evening with Ruse Brewing.

Nestled in the Southeast corner of Portland lies a little brewery shrouded in mystery. Well, maybe not mystery so much anymore as they’ve now been producing super clean, funky, and flavorful beers for a couple of years now. You may have gotten your first taste of them with this year’s release of 3-Way. Yep, we’re talking about Ruse Brewing.

Ruse has been very active in their local creative community to partner with artists and musicians in creating delicious craft beer to pair with their art. Ruse began in the brewhouse of Culmination while its founder searched for a permanent home and to hone his craft. It took a little time, but finally settled in the southeast with a new home and a new partner. Together, they’ve tried to not let themselves be bound by only producing certain styles, rather dipping their toes into the wide gamut of beer out there.

We are incredibly excited to welcome them up to Seattle and to Brouwer’s. We’ll be hosting the brewery on November 15 at 6 p.m. We’ll be tapping the following beers:

Stages of Sundown Imperial Stout with Coffee and vanilla.
Pinot Barrel-aged sour ale conditioned on cherries.
Dream Language Vienna Style Lager. Collaboration with Our Mutual Friend Brewing.
Collective Questions West coast IPA dry hopped exclusively with Mosaic.
Translator West Coast IPA Dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic
Castle of Goop Hazy DIPA fermented on Peach and Tangerine, Dry hopped with Vic Secret,El Dorado, Motueka and African Queen.  Collaboration with Modern Times.
Sci Fi Silhouette Hazy IPA dry hopped with Citra, Vic Secret and Topaz.

Wednesday, September 25th @6pm. An Evening of Fresh Hops with Breakside Brewing

While we’re changing how we’re doing or hop celebration in October, that doesn’t mean we won’t have any fresh hop nights. Since the harvest came early, so are the beers; and that means, one of our fresh hop focused events is going to happen in September.

Breakside Brewing down in Portland has been one of our good friends for the last several years. After hearing that they were coming out with several fresh hop beers in a short period of time, we thought it might be a great idea to grab them all at once at put them on for a special showcase. After all, they brew some of the best fresh hop beers all season.

On September 25th, we’ll be tapping those five kegs and giving everyone a head-start in their quest to try as many freshies as possible during our favorite season of the year. The list of beers includes:

Fresh Sterling Pilsner
Fresh Simcoe Breakside IPA
Fresh Cascade Wanderlust
Fresh Chinook Thirst Trap
Fresh Mosaic Rough Beast

And as a special treat, we’re going to tap The Mountains of Instead, a barrel-aged Apple Ale that we’ve been holding onto for a special occasion.

Thursday, September 19th @ 6pm Aslan/Masonry/Brouwer’s Fremontii Beer Release

We invite you to join us 09/19 for the release of Fremontii. We will be pouring the draft starting at 6pm. Bottleworks will be selling Bottles of Fremontii @ 11am. This beer will only be available at Brouwer’s, Bottleworks, The Masonry and Aslan. We all thought this would be a great way to welcome Aslan to Fremont. Look out there goes the neighborhood.

Fremontii is the result of an afternoon of barrel tasting and blending with Aslan, Brouwer’s and The Masonry. What we came up with was a blend of 3 barrels. 2/3 of the blend consisted of a rustic bock style beer, which was lagered in clean French oak puncheons throughout the winter of 2017. In the spring of 2018 it was re-barreled into second use bourbon barrels and well conditioned wine casks; we took one of each. The other 1/3 of the blend was a 30 month old cask of mixed culture pale Saison. Its difficult to say what “kind” of beer this is, but what we can say is that has well matured acidity, hints of bourbon, and sweet caramel, with classic brett brux in the background. Bottle conditioned with native yeasts and bacteria for 6 months prior to release. 9% ABV

Sunday, July 21st Delirium Flag Day

Delirium Flag Day

July 21st is one of the most significant days for Belgians. It is the day that Leopold I ascended to the throne and the constitutional monarchy of Belgium was established. Citizens and the Belgian diaspora alike celebrate this momentous day. L’union fait la force.

For us here, it is the start of Belgian Beer Week and we thought it’d be a great idea to celebrate one of the most lauded and decorated Belgian beers around – Huyghe’s Delirium Tremens. The idea then popped up to include its siblings, Nocturnum and Red, since then we can represent the three colors of the Belgian Flag.

On Sunday, July 21st, please help us celebrate Belgian National Day with Huyghe. We’ll be offering flights of the three beers all day and having a “keep the glass” special from 6-8 pm. The pink elephant awaits.

August 14th @ 6pm An Evening with Rare Barrel

In the past, you may have noticed at your small bottle share that someone brought an interesting tart treat from an eponymously named brewery in Northern California. Surely you inquired afterward as to where you could find the brewery’s other beers. Well, until recently, the answer to that was not very many places. Recently, however, the good people at The Rare Barrel were gracious enough to send a shipment of beer of this way and some of your favorite sports probably picked some up.

We ended up picking up a few of their brews and thought about what to do with them. A couple went on during Sour Fest, and they were both terrific and two of the most popular beers at the festival. If you missed out, we have great news for you. On Aug 14th, we’ll be putting on all 4 of the beers we were fortunate enough to get from them for your enjoyment. The tap list will be:

Across the Sea Sour Ale w/ Coriander and Sea Salt

Apropos of Nothing Sour Ale w/Elderberries and Lavender

Pop’t Art Sour Ale w/ Blueberries, Boysenberries, and Cherries

Summer’s Gonna Hurt You Sour Ale w/ Peaches and Nectarines

Wednesday, July 31st @ 6pm An Evening With Skookum Brewing

Have you ever sat outside next to an airport and put down a few cold ones? No? That sounds weird, you say? That’s because you haven’t made it up to Arlington to go see the good people at Skookum, conveniently located adjacent to Arlington Municipal Airport. If you haven’t made the stop, you are definitely missing out, but we might have the next best thing.

On July 31st, we’ll be hosting Hollis and his wares in-house for a night with Skookum. They are one of our favorite Washington breweries and we are excited to be able to pour several of his offerings that evening. Tap list coming soon, both expect both hoppy and rich barley treats from them.

July 21st-28th Revisit the Trappists

In this day and age, every brewery out there is throwing new and exciting beers out to the thirsty public seemingly all the time. It’s the era of FOMO – you can’t afford to be shamed on your semi-anonymous beer logging website for missing out on the Super Hazy Pastry Boi ™ of the week. Oh my god, it was sooooooooooo gooooooood. The horror of it all.

Well, you know what is always there for you? What will never be as fleeting as a 1-4-pack/pp limit of micro-brewery hop juice? That’s right, it’s the Trappists. They are a time-honored tradition of brewing excellence. When was the last time you ordered an Orval – the first commercially available Brett beer in the US; or maybe crack open a cellar-temped bottle of delicious Rochefort 10?

That time could be right now – or very soon. It’s the time of the year when we like to look beyond the hype and revisit beers that are on the top of your favorite brewers’ desert island list. Once again, we’ll be offering 20% all the Trappist beers in our cellar and a certain t-shirt might make a repeat appearance.
